Brown Spots On My Ceiling

You look up at your ceiling one fall Sunday morning before church and notice a brown spot that wasn’t there before the last rain. A distracting eye sore in an otherwise beautiful home.

How are you going to get rid of said Brown Spot on your ceiling?

Brown Spots Are Caused By…

Before we describe the remedy for your tainted ceiling, lets briefly look at what can cause the blemish to your room’s décor. Barring some substance being stored and spilled in the attic of your home, most of the grey spots and brown spots on your ceilings are caused by water.

Ideally rain on your roof runs down the:

· Shingles

· Metal covering

· Valleys

and into your gutters or straight to the ground. So, what is it about your roofing system that tends to leak? There are multiple things to look at, but always start with the obvious.

1) Damage to your roof

Has there been a recent storm involving:

· Wind

· Water

· Flying debris

If so, then you or someone who knows roofing will need to get on the roof and check for

obvious damage that causes these brown spot ceiling stains.

  • -Is there a branch through the roof?

  • -Are there shingles out of place or missing?

  • -Is the fascia or soffit out of place, gone or rotting?

  • Is the flashing around your penetrations bad

  • Is there damage to your chimney

All these types of damage can let water in or under your Shingles. Once under the covering water runs and finds the most convenient path of least resistance to the nearest level ground. Often water pools in uneven spots of the roof and WILL eventually cause damage and even cost you money.

2) Age, wear & tear

Everything degenerates over time, and your shingle roof or metal panels are no exception. As the process of heat and cold affect your roof, the granules imbedded in the asphalt start to fall off.

  • The Sun’s heat

  • Wind

  • The expansion and contraction in different temperatures

All cause your shingles to Degranulate. The amount of degranulation increases as time goes by; in turn decreasing the protection your roof provides your house from the elements.

3) Faulty Materials

On rare occasions the actual materials on your roof will have what’s called a Manufacturer’s Defect. A variety of things can happen which cause the products to be defective, but it’s so rare that manufacturers offer Limited Lifetime Warranties to offset the possibilities.

4) Improper Installation

When you decide to:

  • Apply a roof on your new construction

  • Tear off and reapply new shingles

  • Lay metal over your decking

  • Apply TPO, EPDM, or Coatings to your commercial or flat roof

Most people hire a Roofing Contractor near me to get the job done. Unfortunately, not every contractor has the same professionalism and craftsmanship as reputable ones who have been, for years, applying all the types listed above.

If you are searching for a new roof solution to your “brown spots on the ceiling” problem, make sure you:

· Check out the roofing contractor you hire

· Look at their website

· Check their social media presence

· Call and ask for references

· Join area chats, trade pages, & social media pages

The point is, DON’T JUST HIRE THE CHEAPEST GUY! That often translates to money

spent later on to fix improper work done by sub-par companies. You could paint over them and it will be a bit till there is more damage showing, but there will ALWAYS be more damage and it WILL cost you more money!

Fix Brown Spots on Your Ceiling

No matter what cause the unsightly stains from water leaking through your roof, you need to find a way to fix it…and as soon as possible, because it only gets worse. And that means more cost.
