Roofing Ventilation – The What and The Why
Ventilation for your roof is the movement of air through the attic. There are:
Intake areas (places where the air enters your attic)
Exhaust vents (places where the air exits)
The purpose of ventilation is to help regulate the temperature in your home and make it more comfortable and more efficient.
Danger of Poor Roof Ventilation
Hot air rises and cold air settles; that’s science. The problem occurs when hot air rises or cold air settles in your attic and has no outlet. This can cause a variety of issues for you roof.
When a roof is poorly ventilated it can cause premature aging and reduce the lifespan of your roof.
It can cause “ice dams” on your roof which in turn causes undue stress and/or water pooling which can damage your roof.
Indoor temperatures need to be regulated; too hot or too cold is bad for your roof.
It can cause increases in your utility bills due to fluctuating temperatures.
Hot, humid attic/ceiling spaces can allow mold and mildew to accumulate.
Proper ventilation of you roof is a very important, albeit, often forgotten part of home maintenance. Without it you run the risk of possible roof damage and or premature aging.
How Do I Properly Ventilate a Roof
There are 2 basic forms of proper Roof Ventilation.
-Roofing Vents
-Ridge Vents
Roofing Vent Systems
There are many different types of Roof Vents that can be placed on a roof in order to facilitate the flow of air through your attic. Some of the most common are:
Slantback/750 Vents
Whirlybirds
Box vents of all sizes
Heat vent pipes
Gable vents
All the above work with Soffit/Intake Vents on the underside of your Eaves in order to allow air into your roof at the lowest point. Then air is allowed out towards the top of your roof through various types of vents. This helps cool and regulate all the area between the intake and the vent(s). These devices work well and are cost efficient.
Ridge Vent
Ridge Vents are the best ventilation you can have for your Roofing System. It allows air to flow from the soffit openings and escape along the entire length of your roof by passing through a cut made over the entire ridge decking, and covered with the actual Ridge Vent.
This allows for:
A more even coverage of the entire roof
Allows air to circulate through the attic in a larger volume
It is slightly more expensive, but worth it in the long term.
