Winter is not coming, it’s here! That’s right the “old man” is here, and your winter roof

maintenance is now . . . today . . . critical. Pre, current, and post-winter weather inspections and maintenance are needed in order to keep you from shelling out money that could have been saved.
Pre-winter Weather Roof Maintenance
If you know that a storm is on the move and headed towards your home, there are several things you should do to prepare in order to ward off any damage.
· Clean off existing debris
· Leaves should be cleared
· Curled or missing shingles should be:
o Straightened and pushed down
o Replaced if possible
o Tarped over if you don’t have replacement shingles

If you see any of these issues you can’t just jump up on your roof and walk to where the problems are. It dangerous for the inexperienced layperson to walk a roof and depending on the pitch, some roofs can’t be “walked” at all. Best to call a professional if you have any doubt.
· Injury
· Additional roof damage
Are both great reasons to have a roofing contractor perform the pre-winter weather maintenance.
Current-winter Weather Maintenance
It’s hard to do anything for your roof if:
· Snow
· Ice
· Rain
· Or Wind are battering your home
Perhaps if circumstance allows and requires you can use a Roof Snow Rake to carefully

clean large amounts of heavy snow off your roof, but usually all you can do is check your ceiling for:
· Brown spots
· Condensation on the walls
· Or water running (particularly around your chimney or ceiling corners)
If you notice one of the above, it’s very likely you have some
damages that are caused by a leak. Make sure you have someone check out your roof after the weather is passed.
Post-winter Weather Roof Maintenance
OK, so the weather has improved and the sun is shining (hopefully). You’ve noticed one of the signs of leaking or damage either on your roof or inside on your ceiling. How do you address it?
1. Again clean all the debris from your roof
Left unchecked “trash” left on your roof can cause water to “pool” and eventually it will find it’s way under your shingles and into your home. This WILL cost you money!
2. Look for shingle damage
Oft times the hot and cold of winter can cause:
· nails
· the washers around your screws

To “pop” or leak. If this happens there IS water entering your roof and making its way onto your ceiling. If not addressed, the damage will accumulate and the bills to fix it accrue.
3. Check your gutters for Shingle Granules
· Snow
· Ice
· Water & wind
All cause the granules on your shingles to slough off and this reduces your protection. Over time and given enough winter weather, the degranulation of the shingles will allow water to get into your home.
Final Word on Winter Roof Maintenance
Bad weather is unavoidable, and if you are a homeowner, then you are going to have to make sure your dream home undergoes Winter Roof Maintenance. Without it you will reduce the life of your roof thus increasing the amount of money you will spend, be it:
· Decrease in the lifespan of your roof
· Damage to your roof
· Either way, you will pay.
